so i got back to working on this -

started getting bolts and lengths proper, checking off my laundry list of stuff.

then i found this on two journals -

did a little DIY micropolishing from a few how-to's on the net and its looking much better. you could almost remove all the scale from the journal with your fingernail. the "scratch" marks are smudged fingerprints.
