I know all about what it takes to be smog legal and to get a swap BAR'd.

My questions have to do with what smog techs look at as far as the engine is concerned.

I know they look at all your emissions equipment but do they look at the engine code itself? I got a DB1 and I want to know if they are looking for the B18a1 code or are they just looking to see if it's a B18. That being said, would they see B18c and say 'oh ok, it still has the B18 engine'

Also, would it be ok to see a smaller engine in it? Ideally I want to get the XSi B16 swap from hmotors so technically, from a smog point of view, a smaller engine would be better smog wise lol?

I'm not worried about passing the sniffer as that's no problem to me. It's getting them to just go forth with the smog test is what i'm concerned with.

I've called a few smog places by asking questions that I thought would lead them to answering my questions without directly asking them in hopes not to tip them off about the engine codes but I guess I didn't ask the right questions because I got no answers lol. One guy started talking about 5 cylinder engines out of no where WTF?

I've read all the info I could find on the net and in the reference section on here but to nothing answered my questions. So if you got any info, let's hear it. Oh and no he said she said BS, I need legit info. Thanks.

-Headlights cannot be at a ride height of no less than 15in frm ground nor more than 72inch.
-Window tint cannot be more than 20%--checked by a tint meter.nor can it be reflective as in a mirror image type of tint.
-Engine must have all emission regulators that came OEM. EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) PCV(positive crankcase ventilation)and others.

To get an engine bar'd the car can't have too dark of a window tint, have too little tread, & no cracks in the window shield? Wow, that's news to me.

yea if tint is too dark (limo tint) you can get pulled over and ticketed. Thats been a law since 1988.
yea you cant have cracks in front of the drivers side that would distort view.(must have a clear view thats why u cannot have any tint on front windshield

    uh, thanks

lol I appreciate the info, really i do, but did you even read what I wrote? lol.

Also the tint thing is false. In Cali, we can have the rear windows as dark as we want. The fronts and windshield can't have any what so ever.

as far as I know the engine has to be same year or newer and you have to have all the appropriate emissions equipment for the obd as it would be sold in America. at least thats all the guy looked for at my smog shop in socal.

So he didn't look at the block code itself? If so, you need to hook me up with this guy. Looks like i'll be making a short trip from Lancaster to Acton for smog :)

    I see

I'm in basic auto tech core program right now. I was going to do the Mercedes program, hence my sig lol, but last week they told me they are bringing diesel preventative maintenance courses in a few months so i'm going to go that route if the courses arrive by the time I graduate core in april.

I actually go to a guy on Palmdale blvd. he looked to see the series ie d or b and then the displacement so he could check the timing but he didn't care that I had a Japanese engine, he didn't even mention it. He is just a test only center though not a ref. I did the diesel program at Wyotech too by the way.

Mercedes just came back last phase with their STARt program. ELITE is done though, according to the Mercedes instructor.

Are you still working for Nissan?

Which shop exactly? I'll be throwing a GSR into my db1 if that's the case :)

How was their diesel program? Are you still working on diesels?

honestly, i think you'll be fine... you should just get a shaved valve cover so it doesnt say dohc vtec, but leave the honda motor co.

It is a place on 11th street east behind a janky gas station, I could show up with you if you want. He knows my whole family and remembers us every time we go in there. Yet we don't know each others names..lol. The diesel program at wyotech was good, they had all kinds of cutaways and demonstrations with parts, the teachers spent alot of time with each of us. We did everything from electrical to rebuilding transmissions- manual and automatics, hydraulics, engine rebuilding plus much more, I have a huge box of notes/ books and I got an AA in business.

haha i didn't even read your whole question... but YES the Ref's at the State Referee DO know the difference between a b18a/b18a1, b18b/b18b1, b18c/b18c1, etc... they are not dummies! plus they have a chart of every engine ever made by honda, what car it came out of, the year, whether it was Vtec or non-Vtec, etc... so don't go in there acting like a know-it-all or like a total dumbass if you want to be on their good side, be nice & neutral...

& if your gonna get a jdm motor such as the xsi b16a, it's technically not B.A.R.-able since it's a jdm motor. Your better off getting a del sol or 99-00 civic Si b16a2. But if you really want the "XSi b16" you will have to put the b16a2 IM, cat convertor, & i think a couple other parts from the b16a2 in order for it to put out close to U.S. emmisions.

& whatever you do, DON'T do what this guy said! Shaving anything off the motor is a big no no! Not just for state ref reasons but it could get you in trouble if you get your hood pop'd by a cop who know's his stuff. Shaving any writing off the block, head/valve cover is risky buisness IMO.

    My 2cent.

you really should have read the whole question... he said he already knows how to pass the ref

he's asking about taking the car to a regular smog station .. and what they actually check for ... ... i know shaving the valve cover wont work at the ref.. but it might at a regular smog check... and its also not gonna get you in any kind of trouble either

    and btw, i've BAR'd a jdm b16 in my old EG.. ..

    *edit*
this is what i mean by shave the valve cover.. to remove the DOHC VTEC lettering .. a dipshit smog guy make look right past it
