Well, how much are you looking to spend on a motor? For $300 you're not going to be able to get much of anything that's a significant improvement over what you have now.
for cheap, your gonna wanna stay with a d series.
bolts right in with no aftermarket mounts or linkages.
you can get a d16a6 for reasonable prices.
or you can go with a d16z6. etc.
You'e going to need at least a grand for a B16 or LS, possibly more. Also, you can't use your D-series transmission with a B-series motor, so you'd have to get a transmission too. You'd also need an appropriate ECU. For a B-series swap you're probably looking at $2,000, at the least.
I'd say look towards a D16Z6 (92-95 Civic EX/Si motor). They make 130 horse, you can get one for under a grand, and it will bolt up to the transmission that's already in your car. If you can afford the transmission then I'd get that too...the gear ratios will be better suited to the motor than the ones in your STD tranny.
d16 are good to gain experience in buildup with a a6 block and a y8 head and si transmission expecting for n/a 140hp stock internals if willing to build up expect close compression ratio to jdm b16a obd0 they rate 160hp and torque 111 lb
and the d series will easily have an advantage of torque but high end power need boost hope this helps
