I was wondering if there was a way to remove a ball joint from a 95 Honda Civic. Without bringing it to a shop or renting the tool. Anybody have any ideas?
smack it with a heavy hammer on the knuckle that the ball joint is in. sometimes you will get lucky. search youtube. there is a few good videos there. be carefull. you might get some help from auto zone or advanced auto with free tool rental also
Thats a helluva job. It's one of those that is very long and very painful without the right tools. If you try some home brew methods you can end up damaging your steering knuckle or the fitting for the ball joint (making it very difficult to put in your new one).
The tool didn't work! The attachments didn't fit the knuckle. I got one off and new one on with it only cause I rigged it on there. So I stuck the other one in the side of the vice, and got it free a lil bit. Then pounded the hell out of it with a mallet. I could have used the vice this whole time. Oh well now I know how to replace a ball joint.
This is the way to go. Part is already removed, take it to an automotive machine shop and have them do it. The one's on my '91 hatch are pressed in and held secure with a clip.
I have a 10 ton press, did a full polyurethane bushing job and when it came to replacing the front ball joints, I let the pros at a nearby automotive machine shop do that work. Wasn't expensive and was well worth the cost.
