POP3 does have a leave mail on server option, but you'll have to download all the mail every time you check. I had the same question myself... hopefully they will add IMAP functionality soon.
There is also an application to use Gmail as an external remote drive. You can even add files, move files, and look at files through windows explorer. Gmail drive
