ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA (TICKER) —Roger Clemens’ DNA has been linked to blood found in the syringes that former trainer Brian McNamee says he used to inject the seven-time Cy Young Award winner with performance-enhancing drugs, according to a published report early Tuesday morning.

The preliminary DNA results, which are subject to verification tests, could prove critical if prosecutors seek an indictment of Clemens on charges he lied about using steroids, the Washington Post reports.

Clemens testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform last February that he never took steroids or human growth hormone during his celebrated 24-year career.

McNamee, who testified at the same hearing that he injected Clemens with steroids and HGH nearly 40 times between 1998 and 2001, gave federal investigators the syringes, gauze pads and other items he claimed he used to inject Clemens after keeping the materials in a FedEx box in his basement.

Clemens’ legal team has repeatedly said that McNamee is lying about the drug use and that he could have fabricated the evidence.

Rusty Hardin, Clemens’ defense attorney, told the Post on Monday that the DNA tests “won’t matter at all.â€

“It will still be evidence fabricated by McNamee,†Hardin told the newspaper. “I would be dumbfounded if any responsible person ever found this to be reliable or credible evidence in any way.â€

Federal authorities are conducting genetic tests of Clemens’ DNA after the former pitcher voluntary provided them with samples, but even those tests won’t prove McNamee’s claims.

According to the report, the Anti-Doping Research Institute in Los Angeles, who were brought onto the case by authorities, are still attempting to find out if the syringes ever contained steroids or HGH.

Clemens has previously stated that he has been injected with vitamin B-12 and painkillers during his career and the report states that without evidence of steroids or HGH in the syringes, it will be difficult for prosecutors to convince jurors that he was injected with those substances.

The test results are just the latest escalation of the on-going investigation into Clemens and claims that he lied under oath when he disputed McNamee’s claims.

According to the Post, in the last month a federal grand jury has heard testimony from Kirk Radomski, an admitted steroid supplier who provided McNamee with performance-enhancing drugs.

Both McNamee and Radomski were key informants to the Mitchell Report, which linked Clemens to performance-enhancing drugs when it was released December 13, 2007.

Clemens repeatedly denied the accusations in the Mitchell Report, which prompted Congress to call for a hearing on February 13, 2008.

Clemens reiterated his stance during the Congressional hearing, but McNamee told the committee that he personally injected the star pitcher with steroids and HGH numerous times.

The staggering contradiction in testimony prompted the committee to file a request with the United States Justice Department. Federal agents reportedly have interviewed several of Clemens’ friends over the last year, and those people could potentially be invited to Washington.

Clemens, 46, ranks ninth on baseball’s career wins list with 354 and is third all-time with 4,672 strikeouts.
