Yes, I would make it basically impossible to remove the caps if they are clamped.
Reclamp them on the rod only and not the cap. wack with a rubber mallet like suggested. DO NOT USE A PRYING DEVICE. Rather obvious but you would be surprised!
Make sure you replace the rod bolts and follow your helms closely.
when you tap the bearing cap assembly, tap it back and forth from side to side until it loosens up then wiggle it out. You are probably not using enough force since you are using a rubber malet the risk of breaking the caps are reduced so tap it a little harder.
