Those things are crazy.

I saw em on a BMW SUV in a mag once. I dunno if BMW was considering using them, or if that just happened to be the test vehicle.

Where I work they are running prototypes of these type of tires on one of the giant haul trucks (dump trucks) but I think I'm not supposed to talk about it...

those are just for demonstration purposes
they have no sides so you can see that there is indeed no air pressure in them

there was a thing on those tires on the discovery channel about two weeks ago. they are called twheels. pretty neat stuff. the spkes act as extra suspension , the tire is pressed on the rim just like a forklift tire.
they were testing them on a road course, and they showed no lateral flex, in the twisties. bet they would be fun to run.

Oh the possibilities..

Add the ability to stiffen the inner supports via electric current and viola.. 15"psi" launch with a 100"psi" follow through, automatic tire firmness changes that work in conjunction with a G-meter.. You could have 100% optimized traction at all times..

You know what a 300psi tire would do for your gas mileage on the highway? (although the road noise might become unbearable..)

If I had to guess, I’d say the hundreds of engineers who have been working on these tires for several years never once thought to test how they handle different road conditions, turns, and snow. It stands to reason that Michelin’s lawyers never considered the liability of flying debris.

Thank god the internet is full of smart and insightful people to point out such obvious problems!
