Thinking Career Change- Opinions Needed

My brother works in Fremont. Couldn't tell you how many jobs he's referred me on and nothing.

Did he directly hand a physical resume to the hiring manager? That's the ONLY way I've had success with referrals.

He's in the bay area. I'm in southern CA. Hiring managers aren't in his building. Hell, I bet the HR managers couldn't even be helpful, and not just because they're HR managers.

I have a phone interview next week. We'll see how they sell the job. I deal with a lot of pick-up and delivery logistics now. If you're willing to pay, stuff gets there on time. If you want to go with "Bobby's LineHaul Co" because they had the cheapest bid, your stuff will probably be late and damaged.

You'd be surprised by how little you get for being willing to pay right now. Regardless of price I have many areas struggling to get drivers for loads. Anywhere off the major interstate pipeline is a dead zone. Makes supporting agri/oil/vocational business very hard.

Word. Need to have that key relationship. Its amazing though how far it goes when someone vouches for someone they know versus a total stranger. It's all about relationships.

For half a second I thought about getting my CDL and doing CA to TX runs. Apparently west TX is just throwing money at drivers.

Do you just want money or do you want something rewarding that you actually enjoy? If all you care about is money, then we can't/won't help much here.

I think I could enjoy driving actually. Minus the long hours on the road, away from home. I like to drive, you get to explore the country, and training only takes 3 weeks. It's not on my my options list. More like an "if all else fails and I need to pay my bills" option.

I was a traveling technician for 3 years with a territory that covered New England with trips to Ohio and sometimes the DC area. I would drive 65-75k a year. For a while it was cool seeing a lot of New England, but after a while I got sick of it. Fast food all the time, rest stops getting shut down with less places to piss, and the loneliness of the road. I am not the type to talk to anyone, but if you are you may enjoy meeting a bunch of new people.

If you want to weld look construction, some union jobs may pay good. Join the elevator union, around here they do the best.

I feel this thread going off the rails already so I'll throw my 2 cents in.
I am just waiting for the day I've had enough and just cash all my chips in and vacate the northeast.
I have no idea where I will end up, but I daydream of just getting the F* out of dodge.

My old man always dreamed of dropping it all and becoming a beach bum.
I think everyone has fantasies of ditching all responsibilities and just running away.
For some it translates into a career change, for others it leads to retirement eventually I guess?

One day.....

Some companies are doing salary + profit sharing.

Just got back from Maui last month.... Many very happy people tending bar never looked so good.

We just got back from Alaska and all the seasonal tourism employees seemed like they were loving life. Our whale watching guide was about 25 and she just goes back and forth with the whales. 4 months in Alaska and 8 in Hawaii.

Once you get married and have kids and a mortgage I suppose it's not as realistic but it seemed pretty awesome when she was talking about it.

I have a fantasy of quitting my job and becoming a long haul truck driver. lol
I think I've almost romanticized the career at this point. As far as $ vs responsibility goes, it's pretty high up there. Get your shit done... good job. I'd bring my cat along for the ride, haha.

Buddy of mine splits time between packing parachutes and ski bumming. By the numbers he's one of the smartest guys I know. By fun per day he might be the smartest as well.

I want to find a rich ole lady with a bad cancer cough
If you know one, let me know. Finder's fee and all that.

A few random bar conversations in the Florida Keys a few years back and I seriously considered staying.

I'm eh about actual marriage (paperwork/state etc). I'm cool with co-habitation. I think the gf is over that shtick though.

No intention to have kids. In fact, I've been talking about the snip for years.

Mortgage is also too much commitment for me, haha.

I think I need to go explore the options of an "easier" career, or a bum lifestyle. It may suck, I may regret it, but I'll definitely regret not doing it. IDK. I'm about to leave work 12 hours after I got here. Normal day, no fires to be put out, just long. Certainly don't want to do this for the rest of my life.

Read Walden on Wheels. Book about a guy living in a van, but he spent summers in Alaska working touristy things. Made his money for the rest of the year.

A couple years ago my trainer just packed up and left.
He and the old lady had saved up for a down payment on a house, but decided to buy a cargo van, convert it into a little camper on wheels, and left for a year to go rock climb around the country.
They went out west and up into Canada, eventually making their way back east. They are back in the area, he's back training and she's doing freelance stuff, married now.
They figured they had a chance at something, and they should take it. He works 3 days a week, leaving him 4 days to live/enjoy life.

it's not all about the money.
seems like a good place to leave this. this one will always stick with me.
