will a cam gear do me any good with out a peformance cam?

In your 2002 EX's D17 engine, not too much- it'll just let you move your powerband up and down. With a DOHC engine, yes it will help quite a bit- you can adjust the overlap between intake/exhaust. You can't do that with a SOHC.
