Soon (date TDB) we will be leaving the vbulletin platform.
We've been limping along on vb 3.8.5 for the past 4 years almost while we watched vb4 turn into a bloated camry and vb5 is just an outright disaster. Its clear the product is done for.
But, there was simply nothing better to move to, so we stuck it out.
Finally, there is.
I had brought it up with the mods previously that I was considering moving software and they all agree that this is a positive move for the community.
It's called Xenforo. Today, their version I was waiting for, 1.2, has released.
XenForo 1.2.0 Released | XenForo Community
The software is light years ahead, including a bad-ass editor with drag/drop capabilities for attachments, and it's built on a responsive design to enable mobile device use without an app or constant zooming in/out.
Of course, there are some draw backs. Our custom add ons that I either installed or coded myself simply don't exist in a lot of case on xenforo.
Among them, the gallery is getting the axe. I plan to save all pictures loaded there to an archive, but it is in your best interest to save them to your local computer if you don't have a copy of them. I can't guarantee that we will ever have a gallery again.
It is a rarely used feature of the site to be honest, and it's expensive in terms of the add on's cost (which one for xen doesn't even exist yet) plus the storage size.
Attachments should port over correctly to threads.
Usergroups are going to change.
Lots of other things are going to change, especially the look/feel.
If you use tapatalk or forumrunner, those apps will basically become obsolete. You can simply use your phone browser to get a proper display.
Counters will all be reset--- ie, 10 posts, 2 deleted, = 8 real posts will show on your post bit, so expect to lose counts.
So, in the meantime, save anything you might want. My goal is to move 100% of everything, but I can't guarantee that.
Maybe the move will start this weekend behind the scenes... getting the style/template updated to our graphix, etc.
