I work as a Hardware / Software Test Engineer for a MultiMedia Company
and for the software that I work on Mac blows PC's out of the water.

Here's what it comes down to. What you use it for and what your used to.
There are just Mac haters on this site. I am a Mac guy but when people ask me
what type of computer to get I give them an honest answer based on what they're going to be using it for. Oh and for the Windows people all I have to say is.............. VISTA. Hands down the WORST OS ever invented.
I'm going to argue that OS/2 was the worst OS ever. And the worst Windows OS ever was Windows ME. :)

Without a doubt ME is hands down the worst Win. OS. No service pack in the world would have helped that OS.

Windows ME was fucking horrible...

im building a managed services company. about 10% of our userbase is MACs.

guess what the ratio of mac:pc trouble tickets is? you would be surprised. all im going to say is i spend just as much time working on MACs as i do PCs. i dont hate them because they make me money... i hate them because well, trash is trash.

Yes Vista did suck. It got a little better after the first SP but by in large it sucks/sucked. Macs are better at some things, but those things are dwindeling faster and faster with each iteration of their OS.

the biggest problem with Vista was that it was sold to people or installed on equipment that it never should have been on

there was no fucking way in hell that Vista was going to run remotely well on a machine with 512MB RAM... but that is how it was sold... is it Vistas fault that it was sold by OEM companies on computers without enough resources to run it... or that stores pushed customers to upgrade to vista without giving them real information on its REAL system requirements

people were throwing Vista on old XP machines that barely ran XP and were surprised when the new OS ran like shit or did not like their set up, that there werent drivers for their 10 year old sound or video card... that the XP compatible version of their software didnt work well or wouldnt install in Vista
these issues are not the fault of the OS...

i will readily admit and tell anyone who asks... Vista is a fucking PIG... it eats a shit ton of resources...
but if you have a machine with a decent proc, at least 2GB of RAM, and a fairly decent video card, it will run FINE

i have been running Vista for about 2 and a half years with 0 problems

and i spend a TON of time online searching all over the place, often for weird shit, and sometimes winding up in some areas that i probably shouldnt be
i download shit from torrent sites
i stream more porn in a day than most people do in a month

i keep my shit up to date
i know where i should and shouldnt go, and what to do when i end up there anyway
i know what i should and shouldnt click on, and how to react when shit does happen to pop up
i perform basic clean up maintenance to make sure that my computer stays clean
i dont install shit i dont want or need, i pay attention when installing software
i dont have 75 toolbars sitting in my browser, that i dont know how they got there

no viruses
no malware
no spyware
computer runs plenty fast for my needs

if you are slightly more intelligent than a fucking orange, you should be able to keep a windows based PC clean and running well

i had a linux box for a while that i loved... the motherboard shit itself around the time that i picked up my laptop and i never bothered building a new tower... i still plan to eventually build another tower and will likely run some flavor of linux on it

i have had to use and support a few macs at some clients offices and i do not like them at all...

it sounds like he's going to be doing video editing...i did that for a few years and mac does have that industry sewn up.

although doing file conversion on windows is silly.

ffmpeg > everything

and if you're running ffmpeg on windows you're doing it wrong.

Wow this is one of the most ignorant posts I've ever read. Have you done any professional Video Editing? Have you heard of Smoke, Fire or maybe Avid?
Up until recently Avid only supported PC's and guess what every movie you've seen in the past 10 years was edited on Avid.

I knew I shouldn't have posted in this thread. Oh and ask anyone that professionally records / edits audio what computer they run. Just sayin......
To the OP good luck with what you're trying to do man I wish you the best.

I have been in the audio/video business for ten years and I dont remember ever seeing avid used on a pc. Plus final cut pro is taking over (cheaper and more accessable then avid) and I am pretty sure apple owns it.

Pro-tools. Nothing beats it.

Indeed I work for Digidesign

Avid has always been PC based up until I believe Media Composer 4.0.
Final Cut is cheaper but it can't do everything Avid can do and you have to render everything which sucks balls. And you are correct Apple owns it. Oh and if you use Final Cut when running NTSC DFTC watch out for a ton of frames being dropped.

Really....Really...Im just going to have to refer you to E's post. The reason people don't think mac's suck like vista is because the minimum system reqs are actually higher than they are on any MS based system.

Really? Seriously? I've been an off and on video editor for the past 8 years fucktard. Primere is trash. Ulead video studio is childish. The only two viable, non-homebrew editors out there for commercial use are Final Cut and Avid. Both of which, until recently, were mac based. Avid has started producing software for Windows only very recently. So either A) You haven't been doing this very long, or B) you just decided to read something online instead of knowing what you were talking about before you called somebody out. Hell, there's also C) A little of both.

Oh, and just to get the record straight Fire is discontinued, and Smoke:

The Autodesk Media and Entertainment Smoke product is a professional grade online editing and finishing system for visual media.
Formerly only offered as a turnkey solution, Autodesk now offers Smoke as a software only option for Mac OSX as of 15 December 2009.

And the rest of the old IFFFS suite runs on either mac or RHEL.

Get your facts straight next time you try and call me out.

Oh, and guess what, it's only like 30% of the movies in the last 10 years. Most people outsource editing to a bigger company like ILM or Weeda and both of those companies use home brew editing software.

Tool.

Actually Sorry but you're wrong. I have worked in the industry for over 10 years and worked at one of the biggest Post houses in LA. I have never known anyone to run Avid on Mac up until recently when Media Composer 4.0 supported Mac platform. I have been to countless bigtime studios and no one runs Avid on a Mac still to this day. Windows is the main OS for Avid PERIOD. Yes Fire and Smoke is discontinued but guess what ALOT of people still use it.
Oh and by ILM I would guess you're talking about Industrial Light and Magic (Skywalker) which is one of Avid / Digidesigns biggest customers. I know this cuz I have been there to fix some of there problems they were having with their systems. Look you can call me names all you want I don't argue over the net but if you would like my credentials I would be happy to send you my resume. Or if you would like I can give you some names of movies I worked on and you can watch the credits.

Ok so a quick question for you. Before you decide to troll my hubby over and over, can you clear up exactly what you do for a living. Because what you have posted up to now is conflicting. Either you test software/hardware, or you work in an industry position where you know wtf is on everyone's computers at all times when it comes to editing. So tell me please, wtf is it you really do. You test or you implement, you fn tool.

Ahahahahahaaaa this thread is hilarious.

I knew I never should have posted in here. I was in Post Production for 6 years now I am a hardware / software test engineer, I talk to clients all day to help them solve their problems so yeah in a way I kinda do know what's on peoples computers. How about this YOU GUYS / GALS WIN. I don't argue over the net and I'm done with this. I KNOW NOTHING... FAIR?

gotta love the ability of females to sniff out every lie ever told by any man for the last million centuries.

i dont care much for the programs that the two operating systems run.

macs just dont make money, and are cumbersome.

past 30 days....

Nice. Hilarious that the mobile device hits almost match up to the Mac hits overall.

And you kinda know me. I have 4.

Its crazy easy to use if all you do is check email and get on youtube and HS.

There's a button at the top with the firefox logo, and a button right next to it with an envelope....all your programs are in the top bar that says 'Applications'.

Its pretty straight forward for your average non-tinkering user. And the OS is free :D

And if all you do is check email, watch YouTube and browse the web- you can do it all on a 1st gen Celeron running something like Puppy Linux.

I'm going to argue that OS/2 was the worst OS ever. And the worst Windows OS ever was Windows ME. :)

Actually, there is one place where OS/2 > *. Ever been to a black hat party? Nobody knows how to hack into a locked down OS/2 system. :lmao:
