remind me never to go to you for mechanic work..
THIS IS A LEARNING PROCESS AND PROJECT FOR A FRIEND NOT TO PROVE ANYTHING
Yes, they are torque-to-yield and yes they will break if you re-use them. And they usually break off inside the block. But hey, it's not like other people haven't listened to this and come back asking how to fix the broken head bolt.
The point you're missing is that while the dowel pins are for alignment, they're not just for alignment. They're extremely important to ensure that the head is properly aligned on the block. Think about the fact that most of the measurements on these engines are in the thousandth-to-ten-thousandth range. Think you're going to eyeball that? No. No, you're not. Your attitude seems to be "oh well, they don't really matter because they're just for alignment". That's what a bad mechanic would say and why EG6 made the comment he made.
No, you can't re-use a head gasket. You're going to have to eat the cost and use it as a learning experience. Pay more attention to what you're doing in the future.
Also eg6sir this is a first time experience so you can't say im a bad mechanic.
Everyone has mistakes. Matter of fact you don't even know me but your right maybe you shouldn't go to me for mechanic work because I dont charge labor.
It costs like almost $50 for a new head gasket at the parts store but if I do replace it ill have to buy him a new one, maybe an ebay head gasket. hehe
