Timing

when you change the timing, do you have to put a paper clip across the 2 wires on the passenger side under the dash? what if you didnt. i know it willl throw engine codes but isnt it that if you dont, the ecu tries to fix the timing a bit?

if you dont jump the service connector the ECU will make timing adjustments based on load and idle speed and the like.

you can set it without doing that, but it's not the most accurate way.

and not to mention it is a pain, because when you adjust the timing the ecu will try to correct it. so then what you get is your idle surging back and fourth, which makes it virtually impossible to set the timing.
