Overclocking should always be at the front of the requirements. :D

lol, wtf, no. i havent, nor have i wanted to do that in years. seems like too much tinkering for an unnoticeable result (in terms that, i couldn't tell the difference unless i had something that benchmarked it for me).

oh jesus. i hate you.

im planning on building an 1156 machine....i hate you so.

No need to get all defensive - just saying, I doubt overclocking is anywhere near the forefront of the requirements here.

sorry, didnt mean to come off as an anal whore. i was just saying the 785g has other advantages besides overclocking and unlocking and that those options were also there if he does choose too.

i'm beyond parts at this point. i think the 209 deal E posted is the best bet. if it lasts me a year, so be it... i just need something now and on the cheap.

Make sure you get a processor fan and some Case fans B.....And you have a video card

it comes with a fan on the proc already. i won't be clocking it, and my house is pretty cold anyway (~60 most of the winter).

Always is for me, but it's kind of like speeding- not worth it unless you're REALLY far over the limit for long periods of time. Overclocking to me is going for at least 50% faster than the stock clock, 100% if possible.

/me dies.

wtf. why?

I do video processing all day on my semperon 2600+. granted it's slower than I'd like, but the difference between two minutes to re-encode and two and a half minutes isnt really all that important to me.

bleh, we've gone and stolen B's thread.

Crunching movies? Recoding really long DV streams? Editing huge RAW files? Stuff like that. Keeping an SLI video card setup fully fed at max settings in-game takes a lot of processor power too- with one card, I wasn't stressing the processor TOO much, but with two cards running max resolution and max eye-candy settings on, the CPU has a lot more work to do.

B's already bought his combo, and he was the one that wanted to replace his rig with an unrealistically cheap setup anyway. :p

This is why you should smoke. I just get those setup to run in series and then go smoke....make a sammich....smoke again...you know. And then when i want to work again i come back and it's ready.

Nah. No smoking for me. I've always been a modder- computers, cars, bikes etc- so overclocking is just a given for me. I always squeeze the most I can out of pretty much everything.

I had/have NO budget for this and money is REAL tight. so yeah, i got pretty much the cheapest thing out there that would work for me. all said an done, between the board, the psu, the ram, and now this barebones, i spent $550 i didn't have in the first place.
