Cool. You nix the income tax, I nix the sales tax. Let's see how that works out.

I'm with totalburnout on this one...I don't see how the sales tax has anything to do with this...

And how much did you gross, exactly?

What the heck does it matter what he grosses? Are you to say how much someone should or should not earn? The fact of the matter is he is treated unequally because he is a comparatively more valuable asset to a business in a capitalistic society than yourself.

And look at the wonderful result of trickle down economics.

You can hate it all you want, but it isn't going to change the fact that when you tax business they are going to pass that loss on to the customers, and their tax cut Obama promised is going to go bye-bye. I can't believe that in America, the land where taking the opportunity to make something of yourself, and reap the benefits of hard work, there are so many people that want to take what other people work, just because they are more successful.

91,000

And, it should be noted that I wrote off about $28,000 in mortgage interest, $5k in business expense, and a couple other deductions to get my AGI down.

how do you figure?

first, sales tax is a local establishement by the state. It's not a federal program, thus it has 0 bearing on this thread.

2nd, If i buy more things with my larger salary, I pay more in sales tax over time.

so, you're wrong.

Let's imagine two frugal traveling salesmen. They each have to buy a new car every four years to (say) keep up appearances, and they need reliable transportation.

(One guy makes 20K, the other 300K)

Run the numbers on a the RATE of total income each pays on on 5% sales tax.

Poor Boy buys a $20,000 car pays $1000 or 5.0% of his income.
Rich Boy buys a $60,000 car pays $3000 or 1.0% of his income.

Poor Boy has 5 times the tax bite, or rate of tax on a car. Rich Boy hardly feels sales taxes.

Yes, they want people that are more successful to pay even more, so they can pay even less, welcome to socialism.

Income tax = progressive.

Sales tax = regressive.

In a progressive tax, the more you earn, the higher your tax rate. In a regressive tax, the less you earn, the higher your tax rate.

Right, but you're still not being asked to contribute anything more then he is as you would be with the income tax, it just hits you harder because you're talking about less income to start with...

I don't need you to quote finance 101. I assure you that I excelled at the class and had a much firmer grasp of how to be a productive asset in society than yourself.

I'm glad you can quote textbook definitions of different means of taxing individuals. Would we like to talk about tax shelters that defer, avoid, or reduce taxable income? Mmmkay pumpkin, we understand the terminology.

What we don't understand is how any of this is relevant to the Individual A paying taxes at a disproportion level in comparison to Individual B who earns less. Therefore you are effectively punished for being more productive. Seems brilliant!

Hey you're more successful than this other guy so we'll even the playing field and you have to pull his weight too!

This is why we hate Obama and people who think like yourself.

Fuck you, I earned that.

So I take more shit for being at a lower rung?

he may not 'feel it' but he still pays more.

Looks to me like the 20k sales man needs to step up his sales game and stop whining or find a job that he doesn't suck at :)

Why do you rob banks? Because that's where the money's at.

Those who have more pay more. It's as simple as that. I wouldn't bitch if I made his salary.

Sure he pays more, but he can afford it.

So I take more shit for being at a lower rung?

Uh, yep.

You argue that it all equals out, because you take a hit on the regressive taxes, and wealthy persons take a hit on the progressive taxes. But that's EXACTLY WHY the progressive taxes were put in place, to try and level things out a bit. It's engineered socialism. It didn't occur via natural phenomenon.

So once again, why should people be punished for earning more money?

No you take the same amount of shit because its a flat tax rate which is the epitome of equality.

You just make less shit so justifiably you should feel the impact of buying goods more so than others that are more productive.

No one ever said that life was fair. Why should you receive special treatment because you're not on my level financially?

...because you're a deadbeat I should have to suffer? Sounds absolutely reasonable.

Umm hey guys, I'm going to be moving out here soon. When I move out I'm going to need all the help I can get... I'm going to be working a full time job and going to college. Money is going to be tight, what's wrong with me getting some help from the government?

You want a flat tax? Nix the sales tax. You claim you know economics, you know that sales tax will slant the whole "flat tax" thing towards the rich.

Funny because I look to hit about $75k my first year out of school and am effectively pushed into the same tax bracket as B.

I guess I shouldn't bitch that they want to take more money from myself than you, but wait, this just in - I have ~$25,000 of debt for school because I was proactive and attended a college that would further the success of my career.

I invested a whole hell of a lot more than you did to get to where I am now. Is this taken into account when we're blindly robbing me of my hard earned money?
