So the fiance and I need a bed in the new apartment, and we're considering a Tempurpedic. Anyone have one or slept on one? What about those sleep number doohickeys? Thoughts/comparisons to other beds? Should we just pick one up from Ikea and be done with it?

a tempurpedic will run you about $3500. which, isnt' TOO much since you will keep it 5-10 years. but they take a while to get used to since your body sinks in. if you toss and turn a lot, they can be uncomfortable.

imho, the sleep number is a gimic for people who argue with their spouse. odds are, you have used the same bed for quite a while, so you and the wife would want a similar bed.

i wouldn't pick one up from ikea, but thats just me. they don't specialize in beds. i would find a good furniture store if i were you. i bought my last bed from macy's when they had a huge sale going on. a decent matress works wonders, but you can always add on a pad later if it's too hard.

i know several people who are sleeping on memory foam... myself included... and they all love it
i know 2 people who had a select comfort and traded it out for a memory foam and have no regrets
i have slept a few nights on a select comfort and was far less impressed with it than i am with memory foam

basically id go memory foam....

there are more than just tempurpedic out there though... so go test out a few different types if you have the chance to...
and dont lay there on your back looking at the ceiling unless you normally sleep on your back.... if you are a side or stomach sleeper then test the bed that way... if they dont have a pillow on the bed grab one or two... get comfortable on the bed like you were going to sleep... then just lay there... dont just lay there for 30 seconds... give it several minutes... roll over... get readjusted...
you wouldnt consider backing a car down a driveway 50ft and then pulling back forward a proper test drive so dont do the equivalent of that with a bed...

either way most of the premium beds now days have 60-90 day test runs... so you can actually get it in your home and see how it is to really sleep on it for a few weeks before having to make the final decision

some people complain that memory foam can be hot to sleep on... while it is a bit warmer than a standard mattress i didnt find it to be a problem... but there are some brands that offer specialized foams that tend to stay cooler... some people just run a topper that is made of the cooler foam

we got the physical bed from a bob's discount furniture store
quality is... well you get what you pay for. a few things i had to work out with it but overall the appearance is very nice and is holding up well (finish on wood, leather padding on footboard and headboard)

the mattress we picked up from sams club, its a seally or one of those deals
price was decent, matress seems to be decent and comfortable

we went king size
great if you want your own space and your partner is a little heater and makes you too hot
not so great for being all cuddly and shit
i can easily lay comfortably on my bed with my arm outstretched all the way and still not touch my old lady
and the dog has plenty of room without inadvertently taking a foot to the face or getting shoo'ed away during the night

paying 1500+ for memory foam is stupid unless you want to brag about the brand you own.

When i bought my bed i went in looking at a queen size Serta advertised for $499, but after laying on every bed they had for haha's I went with a King Koil Comfort Sensation elite Hamilton edition, ran me about 1800. i didn't like the the memory foam beds, wasn't for me. the sleep numbers were worse

I will say this, find a bed that's right for you because it may be a sales pitch, but you cant put a price on a good night sleep

it WAS pricey. I aid about 2700 for it.

I probably wouldn't do it again. i'd go generic.

I have a nice ikea bed. IE nice Ikea is nothing in terms of bed world.

I sleep on it real well. It's firm and with a mattresstopper its comfortable enough for me with my feather bed and euro down comforter on top of it.

Glad we didn't pay much.

Plus ours still feels the same as it did when we first got it. Hopefully in 5 years it will still be holding up but for the price we can just trash it and get another one.

The wife and i bought a sleep number bed when we got married, 3.5 years ago.. overall its not bad.. we bought the cheapest model they had, and i wish we would have spent a little more to get the next one up. It is handy being able to adjust the sides independently, but if the wife gets up, my side collapses and i roll into the middle. It didnt solve my back pain like the commercial says, either.. i spend half the night sleeping in a chair... i cant remember the last time i had a full nights sleep.

If i had to do it again, i would definitely go a different route... These $500 memory foam mattresses mentioned above sound like a pretty good option right now..

i have similar findings... although i fall asleep faster on a soft 'setting' (sleep number), i stay asleep longer on a more firm setting.

Wow how do you do it.. My lower back is screwed and my shoulders are screwed too.. I hate my firm mattress I am going to get a nice soft and fluffy bed to sink into. I know when I visit my grandma, the bed I sleep on in the spare room is soft and fluffy and I sleep all night.. My stupid bed if im lucky I get 4 hours of sleep every night..

soft matress will KILL your bad back. it sounds good for the first couple days, but in time you will hate it. I know people who put ply wood on their beds to make it stiff. lol

I don't see how. I have been sleeping on a stiff mattress for 5 years and my back hurts everyday I wake up.. It doesn't work for me, but maybe others??

She has this demonic mattress she brought with her from Japan... It goes on the floor and is the stiffest mattress I've ever felt. The first time I saw it I plopped down on it like a regular mattress and actually hurt my tail bone. I honestly woke up with bruises from it after a few nights. It looks like a regular 12" mattress but it feels more like plywood with a few layers of fabric on it. It has a tiny bit more give than plywood but seriously not too much.

I do think firm mattresses are better but there is a limit.

Just becareful when buying a mattress. Mattress salesmen are worse than used car sales men. The gf and I got a plush Mirulux from Sleepys 2 years ago. It was on the floor for almost 1500, we paid 725 out the door. We actually pinned 2 sleepys against each other in the end to get an extra 50 bucks off. I do not want to buy a mattress for a long time. We went to a lot of places looking, she likes the softest bed possible and I need a firmer mattress. I would not have bought from sleepys since I felt they are crooked but we wanted the mattress they had.

I need a firmer mattress for my back but it has to have some cushioning. If its too hard my legs start killing me.

I have one of those mattress with the extra cushions on both sides: it was pretty expensive(I think I paid $600 something for it?) but I simply got ripped off on the box that goes under it; I think like $270.
