    double check the firing order and make sure all wires are seated, then adjust timing to spec it's probably to far advanced.

    Either your friend has some bad luck with transmissions or can't drive/ beats the crap out of the car. From the way it sounds the trans is just chewed apart, drain the oil I bet it will look silver.

If this is the case the best thing you could do for it would be drop a old MG engine in, there's actually a decent aftermarket for them and it should fit in the volvos engine bay.     Desktop Dyno 2000

    Desktop Dyno is pretty accurate for V6 and V8 OHV domestic engines, which is what the program was originally geared for. I wouldn't trust it for anything else.

    Is there anti freeze in the oil or oil in the anti freeze? does the car only smoke when the engine is cold or at all times? How do the plugs look?

    If you're feeling a difference and you have a moderatly bulit engine or less then your ign system worn out and needed replacing. MSD unit's aren't a bad thing however they are not needed unless you have a serious motor
