you don't often get viruses... but malware seems to be a problem. we use AVG at the office but i'm iffy if i'm going to renew that contract after next year.
malwarebytes, superantispyware both are good choices.
I use Avira. I downloaded free from Cnet.com. Works great. I also run rkill before i do a scan. it shuts down background operations that could inhibit a scan.
I was running Norton IS for a while, but I got tired of paying for it and switched to Avast. I believe none of the free ones have real time protection, it just scans your drives periodically. So far so good with Avast.
