There is absolutely a formula and its not magic, it's common knowledge. It's called eating right and working out.

Please don't think that if you stop drinking soda and take the stairs that you are going to loose weight. it has absolutely zero effect. it's a fact.

In order to loose weight you need to burn more calories then you take in ..thats a fact. if you stop drinking soda but still eat 4 pieces of pizza with water, a bagel and cream cheese, chips and then sit on the couch for 4 hours watching America Idol and other garbage on TV you will never loose weight or be in shape.

Fact: The more muscles you have the more calories you will burn even just standing around.

You need to eat the right foods, and the right amount: the reason why you always hear this is A: to get the right vitamins and minerals your body needs and B: because eating often increases your metalbolism.

Ask any body builder who doesn't do steroids how much they eat a day and how often. And ask them how much cardio they do. I bet you will get a very common answer.

Im not saying people should try to be body builders when they work out. but strength training 2-3 times a week along with the right diet will get you to where you want to be And if you want to be more muscler, then heavier weight training is needed.

You will never see any results by simply not drinking soda and taking the stairs.....again, cardio type stuff is good for the heart to be healthy but its not going ot help you loose the amount of weight most people are looking to loose.

this isn't anything new people

You said above that the only way to get in shape is hard work and sacrifice. This is wrong and stupid.

What it involves is eating less calories than you're burning. That's the easiest thing in the world because YOU DON"T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING. That being said its an ultimate statement of personal will power.

Making small adjustments like walking in and taking the stairs(I am on the 9th story of a large building), not having a soda would net me 400 calories probably every day 5 days a week. You tell me 2k a week wouldn't make a difference? Hmmmmmmm

You do cardio for a completely different type of work out. Anabolic vs Catabolic. Cardio creates a cardio deficit.

You could walk a golf course, go walk your dog, row a canoe, bike ride, walk to work, ride to work, etc and create a calorie deficit to lose weight. Your formula is so narrow it doesn't make sense. There are so many ways to live a healthy lean lifestyle that don't involve weights.

Stop with your "facts."

last october i left for college at 230lbs. within 2 months i was down to 200,just from eating 1 time everyday,no soda, and walking back and fourth to class.now my wife lives out here with me and im back up to atleast 225.i went from a size 38,down to a size 34,now back up to 36.

my problem is the eating part.monday through thursday i eat one time, around 11:45pm.but i eat more than a normal portion.friday, saturday and sunday i eat whatever/whenever.

i also drink a hell of alot of soda now(i stopped soda all together for a good 6-7 months, but recently picked it back up)

my plan is to stop with the soda, start eating healthier stuff and try to be more active, even if its just walking around places.

You really have no clue what your talking about. Seriously, you don't. You are talking about things that make for a healthier lifestyle by making choices like riding a bike to work or walking a golf course. I really wish you luck withgetting in shape doing that. Let me now how that works out for you.

In the meantime for anyone serious about getting in shape. I would strongly recommend you NOT listen to J, or for that matter, me.

I would contact a personal trainer and go over your goals. I had one for about 3 months. I spent 5 minutes a day on a treadmill to warm up the muscles and get my heart rate up and that was it. The rest was strength training. I gained a good amount of muscle mass and lost a real 12 lbs in 3 months.

it's definately hard. i let myself go as well. i've been complacent the past few years.

But, you have no idea how much harm you are doing to yourself by only eating 1 large meal 1 time a day. your killing your metabolism and that is why you are gaining weight rapidly.

eat...5 times a day, 250-300 calories a day. its hard as hell but the results are rewarding. Throw in some strength straining and muscle building excercises and you will see amazing results.

To say I don't know anything coming from someone that used a personal trainer and says there is one way and only way to get in "shape" isn't very fair. Yet alone reasonable. I've been around here discussing fitness before you were a member and honestly I've never given bad advice. Find one time besides your disgareement and I'd happily never bring the topic up again. I lost 70 lbs at one point in my life making small changes that catapulted into huge ones.

I'm in pretty good shape though and practice what I preach?

Anything helps. Every little thing helps. Only thing that matters more than your diet is consistently being active. Calorie deficits are everything. You even said so yourself but not in legible words.

Meal frequency is a very controversial topic as well. Many many people have opinions on it and site a singular source one way ore another. I think each body is different and certain people will eat less calories in one meal then if they "stoke the fire" in 5. While others will manage their appetite better in 5. I eat 3 regular meals and have low cal low fat high protein snacks. I don't digest fat well so I have to stay away.

I agree with you that there are other ways of going about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle that are valid, but from my own personal experience, I feel like what he's saying (that building muscle will stoke your metabolism) has validity to it as well.

I don't consider myself ripped by any means, but I am fit enough to where people notice and comment on my arms and chest. People assume that I'm a gym rat, but honestly the only thing I do is a full body weight lifting routine twice a week (Monday and Thursday). I don't lift a lot of weight and I don't lift to be big, I designed this routine to cultivate useable and functional muscle.

And guess what? I eat like a horse, all day, every day and never gain a pound. I do try (and I think mostly succeed) to eat a healthy, balanced diet, but I won't refuse carbs or sweets. I drink quite a bit of beer as well.

And before anyone asks, no, I haven't always been this way. Some people naturally have better metabolisms, but I don't think I'm one of them. Four years ago I was 50 pounds overweight, so it's entirely possible for me to get fat. Plus, I'm almost 30 now and this is probably the best shape I've ever been in, so I don't think I can attribute it to natural fast metabolism.

I do enjoy running and biking and I will do those things when the weather is nice, but I don't do much cardio wise over the winter and I still don't gain any weight. I really feel like maintaining a bit of muscle mass is the thing that's made all the difference for me...

but you are talking a totally different subject. His comment wasn't "how do i live a healthier lifestyle", he indicated he wanted to get in shape. Like i said, getting in shape requires a lot more then ditching soda and taking the stairs. thats all im going to say on this topic anymore.

I lift every day during the work week.

I just have many friends that have never seen a gym and are in great shape, and much leaner than I am just by living a healthy lifestyle. I can't advocate that lifting weights is the only way to stay in shape because its simply not true.

not saying just lifting weights, im talking about strength training and muscle building.

Also, going to a gym and lifting dumbbells isn't the only way to build a useable set of muscles. A lot of the things that I do are things that use body weight (pull-ups, dips, etc.). Things like biking, climbing, swimming, etc. can build muscle as well.

The only point I'm trying to make is that I think a lot of people discount the benefits of maintaining a bit of muscle. You don't need to be a body builder to reap those benefits either. Burning/cutting calories definitely can work for losing weight or maintain a certain weight, but having muscle will supercharge the metabolism and allow for the ability to control and maintain your weight without needing to be a Nazi about calories...

I derail threads like its my job.

I used to weigh 175, 15% body fat. I ran 10 miles per week, that's about it. Then I tore my ACL in August, 11. That put me down from running until May or June of 2012 (I waited till Dec. 11' to get surgery). In the mean time, I switched to lifting during break at work for 20 minutes and doing a few sets of situps and pushups at home. I only do this 3-4 days per week. Now I am up to 185, but body fat is down to 13%. I consider what I've been doing "nothing" but it has given good results.

I've just found my 2013 NY resolution...

Get on this server and mine until I overtake you with resources.

But back in reality, I'm simply extending my 2012 resolution; Being positive. It's had quite an effect on me, my friends, and even some of my clients have noticed the change I made. I was still coming up with different realizations that extended that resolution in November.

I'm not going to resolve to work out and put on weight, because it simply won't happen. I plan on being debt free by June save for my mortgage and normal bills, though. :D

Sounds good to me! :) I've only got a few things left to do... Finish up a few VIP perks, get the forum interface running (you register your forum username through the game... spam-proof!), finish up the web store, tweak a few plugins, and balance the Villager-vendor's items for sale. Off the top of my head it's pretty much ready after that!

Land management is complete, you can already claim a plot and set it up for protection against sieges, and the tutorial book is done, so when you join you get a book that explains it all.

Not to derail the thread again... but get to it. lol
