After a good day of drifting, I got the car to smoke and slide, and it was a damn long day.....damn long HOT day... And I worked the night before, had no sleep, and drank nothing but water all day...and for the first time...it looked like I had no problems...I didn't even have to change a tire, or touch a tool....at all...all day. It was like the drift gods shuned a little light to my efforts, and they were rewarding me for an engine rebuild, car setup, and a lot of work to the damn car. Almost a perfect ending to a sweet day.
Well...I guess they were teasing or screwing with me. When I got home, I took a breather, and sat down a while...prolly about 30 minutes....then I decided I would go ahead and unload all the crap that I always try to take ( incase shit breaks,) or other things like chairs, tent, cooler.....and they were in the Subaru, and the Z was parked in front of the garage, so I had to move it. Scroll back to when I said it was a HOT day...hot and muggy...very little wind, but enough to feel comfertable, when the wind blows on you. Now, I had something set wrong with the timing, or a tiny vaccume leak, or prolly the old fuel pressure regulator was giving up the ghost...who know's...I'll investigate that later, and fix it. Anyways, during this hot day, we were alway lined up to run the next run, and due to the slight overheating problem, I was inching forward everytime a car infront of me went on the track. And the heater was cranking in the car, to help circulate and bleed off some of the high engine temps....and I was pretty much inching forward all day with the drivers door wide open.
Well, back to the fawkup...when I was backing the Z down the driveway, the heater was still on, so the habit of the day was to swing the door open. Welp...as I was backing out, due to being tired, drained from energy, hot, and sober...I forgot that there was a tree with a mound of sand next to the paved driveway on the driver side.....so the car is in gear, rolling backwards, and the door sunk into the mound of dirt, and the car kept going. Snap, crunch, pop....my heart just fell thru my anus when I heard that. So now the door is hanging on one hinge, crunched up into the fender, and the near mint Z was damaged.
Picture time... http://www.redpepperracing.com/gallery/v/airjockie/Z+body/
So now I got to scrimp, save, or sale a lot of stuff, so I can get the parts, paint, and time to get this done...and so I can also have the car back on the road. After thinking about it...I'm not too butt-hurt, since the door and the fender already was infested with rust bubbles, and crappy paint, plus the window never closed right, and the door handle snapped over the winter, I got a cheap handle put on last week, just so I can open the door. But the seal on the outer portion of the windw was crapped out, and during a rain storm...the door would fill with water...so maybe this is a godsend...an excuse for me to make it look hotter. Doors are easy to come by, prolly $100, and fenders as well...but my fender has those hot flares on the wheelwells...so reproducing that curve, or shape to match both sides, will be hard...but hey...the other fender is rusting as well...so I'll replace them both, repair the cracks, strip the roof( bad cracking issues), and try to get to the floor pan and framerails repaired.....looks like a mess of work infront of me...and I hate body work...something I'm not to good at. But I'll piddle with it till is set for paint.
Anyways...flares are sold in sets, front pair and rear pair, so I guess I do the front, and try to get it to match the rears, but the rears are also infested a little with rust, so maybe I might attack those as well....
